Read my thought on why I moved my newsletter to Substack here.
Dear old college roomie,
Thank you for being my first roommate so many years ago. You’re the very reason I called my newsletter “Eclectica”.
You were the first person to see, even before me, that my stories are varied, as are my experiences and tastes. You handed me my first issue of Nylon magazine and said, “It’s just as eclectic as you are.”
Thank you for seeing this. I’m just now understanding what a gift that word was to me.
Ec•lect•ic - n. one who uses a method or approach that is composed of elements drawn from various sources
Eclectic comes from the Greek eklektikos (meaning "selective"), from the verb eklegein, "to select." Eclectic was originally applied to ancient philosophers who were not committed to any single system of philosophy but instead selected whichever doctrines pleased them from every school of thought. —from Merriam Webster
